Prof. Balachandra Mungekar, Member, Planning Commission has been appointed as the President of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla and the Chairman of the governing body of the Institute. He replaces Prof. J.S. Grewal, Eminent Historian. Both the society as well as the governing body have been reconstituted for a fresh term of three years.
The IIAS society has apart from the ex-officio members, 24 non-official members who are educationists and persons of eminence in the field of learning, culture and science.
Six vice-chancellors of Indian Universities are also nominated as members under the rules of the society. The following are the vice-chancellor members of the IIAS society : Prof. Mushir-ul-Hassan, Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi; Prof. S.P. Thyagrajan, Madras University; Prof. Vachaspati Upadhyaya, Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit University, New Delhi; Prof. Surabhi Banerjee, Netaji Subhas Open University, Kolkata; Prof. C. Balaram, Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; and Prof. Rupa B Shah, Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Womens University, Mumbai.
From among the vice-chancellor and non-official persons nominated to IIAS society, Prof. Mushir-ul-Hassan, Prof. Rupa B. Shah; Prof. Sabyasachi Bhattacharya and Shri Sadanand Menon have also been nominated as members of the governing body.
