India will be hosting the 15th Commonwealth Conference of Statisticians in New Delhi in 2010. This was decided at the just concluded 14th Conference of Commonwealth Statisticians at Cape Town, South Africa. Giving this information at a Press-meet here today, the Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Shri Oscar Fernandes said that it is indeed a great honour for India to host the next Commonwealth Conference of Statisticians.
At the Press-meet, the Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Shri P.S.Rana, handed over the Conference Bell to the Minister Shri Oscar Fernandes, for placement in the New Delhi Conference.
He said this will provide an opportunity to the Commonwealth nations to exchange their experiences in Data Collection as well as benefit from India, which is one of the pioneers in the field. He said, the day is not far when On-line Data Collection will become a universal phenomena, in this IT dominated globalised world. On-line Data Collection will greatly reduce time in preparing the survey reports, which are needed for policy and planning initiatives. Shri Oscar Fernandes expressed happiness that a number of statisticians heading institutions across the world, were the product of the Indian Statistical Institute based in Kolkatta.
A delegation headed by Dr.S.K.Nath of the Central Statistical Organisation, represented India at the Cape Town Conference. As decided, the Conference Bell was handed over to the Head of the Indian team by the Statistician General of South Africa.
