The total import of sensitive items for the period April 2005 -July 2005 has been Rs.4864 crore as compared to Rs.5143 crore during the corresponding period of last year, thereby showing a shortfall of 5.4%. The gross import of all commodities during same period of current year was Rs.183537 crore as compared to Rs.139634 crore during the same period of last year. Thus, imports of sensitive items constitute only 3.7% and 2.6% of the gross imports during last year and current year respectively.
Imports of edible oil, milk & milk products and rubber have shown a decline at broad group level during the period. Imports of fruits & vegetables, cotton & silk, spices, automobiles, marble & granite, tea & coffee, alcoholic beverages, SSI and other products have shown increase during the period under reference.
In the edible oil section, the import has decreased from Rs.3327.86 crore last year to Rs.2381.67 crore for the corresponding period of this year. The import of crude oil has gone up by 4.6% and that of refined oil has gone down by 73%. The decline in edible oil import is mainly due to huge shortfall in import of RBD Palmolein, which has gone down by 63% and other refined Palm oil which has gone down by 83%.
Imports of sensitive items from Brazil, China P RP, Benin, Cote D Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, USA, Egypt A RP, Ghana, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam Soc Rep, UAE Mozambique, Germany, and Nigeria etc. have gone up while those from Indonesia, Argentina, Malaysia, Japan and Thailand etc. have shown a decrease. click here for statement
