The Home Minister has said that there will be no constraint of funds in the way of promotion of Hindi. Shri Shivraj Patil was speaking at a function organized by the Department of Official Language of the Ministry of Home Affairs here today in connection with the Hindi Diwas. He said that Hindi should be promoted as a unifying language. At the same time, the linguistic diversity of the country should be maintained and nurtured. No section of people should feel that Hindi is being imposed on them. Shri Patil said that there is a rich treasure of literature in various languages of our country. Translation of this in Hindi will contribute to promotion of Hindi. While the use of Hindi has been increasing among people and also in Parliament, in official work, it is not being used to the desired extent. Wherever Hindi is being used, it is largely very complex and difficult to understand. The Home Minister stressed the need to change the mentality and make more and more use of simple Hindi in official work. He expressed confidence that the use of modern tools like computer software would facilitate the spread of Hindi much faster.
In his address, the Minister of State for Home, Shri Manik Rao Gavit said that it is essential to do official work in the language of the common people. This will help implement the programmes and policies of the Government better
To promote the use of Hindi in offices, the Home Minister unveiled the translation tool Mantra. This tool, developed by the Centre for the Development of Advanced Computing, Pune (C-DAC), is designed to assist the various departments and ministries of the government to create quick and effective standard Hindi translations of English Documents. This software is being made available on the Internet also.
Shri Patil also unveiled the facility of learning LILA Hindi Prabodh courseware on a mobile handset through Multi Media Cards (LILA: Learn Indian Languages through Artificial Intelligence). Using this latest technological tool, one can not only understand Hindi words formation and pronunciation but also Hindi sentence structure through interactive exercises.
Shri Patil also inaugurated the facility of learning the LILA Hindi Prabodh, Praveen & Pragya curriculum through the medium of Bengali language.
Shri Patil also released the new edition of Prabodh Pathshala and Rajbhasha Bharati on this occasion.
Shri Shivraj Patil also gave away the Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha awards for the year 2003-04. Ministries and Departments of the Government of India, nationalized banks, Public Sector Undertakings and Town Official Language Implementation committees are given these awards annually for promoting the use of Hindi in their official work. . The Home Minister also gave away awards for original writing in Hindi.
