Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of 68 Central Sector Projects under implementation as of now, out of the total 674. These Infrastructural Projects cost between Rs.20 crore and above, Rs.100 crore and above and Rs.1000 crore and above. The Status Report on Central Sector Project implementation by theMinistry of Statistics and Programme Implementation also says that Andhra is followed by Uttar Pradesh with 52, Maharashtra with 50, Tamil Nadu with 45 and Orissa 44 etc.
The Report also revealed that the cost of the projects under implementation in Andhra Pradesh is now expected to go up to Rs.9,600 crore from the original estimate of Rs.8,435 crore. In case of Uttar Pradesh, the presently anticipated cost of the projects under implementation will now be nearly Rs.13,562 crore against the original of Rs.12,628 crore. Maharashtra with 50 projects, originally estimated to cost nearly Rs.15,912 crore, will now need nearly Rs.20,255 crore with the rise in anticipated cost. Tamil Nadu, though 4th among the States, tops in the value of 45 projects, originally estimated at Rs.26,657 crore. This estimate is now likely to go upto Rs.27,097 crore. Orissa fifth among the States having 44 projects, originally estimated at Rs.16,739 crore, would now has to spend over Rs.17,661 crore on the projects, according to current estimates.
An analysis of these projects and their original costs indicate, that there has been cost-escalation in almost all projects in the States, but in Jammu and Kashmir alone, the cost of eight projects under implementation, originally estimated at Rs.3,800 crore, has risen over three times to Rs.11,431 crore. Another interesting feature revealed by the analysis is that Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Dadra and Nagar Haveli have one Central project each under implementation, while Sikkim has two, Manipur and Himachal Pradesh 3 each, followed by Uttranchal 5.
Among all the projects 83 have been classified as multi-state, with their total original cost being Rs.35020 crore. According to current estimates, this has risen to over Rs.40,621 crore. The cumulative expenditure on the Central Projects in various states, upto the end of March this year, totals Rs.111165 crore.
