Altogether 4494 companies were registered in the country under the Companies Act, 1956 in June this year as compared to 3011 in the corresponding month of 2004. The number of companies limited by shares was 4480. Besides, 14 guarantee companies were also registered. The total authorized capital of the companies limited by shares put together amounted to Rs. 1043.5 crore. Of the 4480 companies limited by shares and registered in June this year, 146 were public limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs. 270 crore. The number of private limited companies was 4334 with an authorized capital of Rs. 773.5 crore.

The highest number of companies, limited by shares, registered during the month was in Delhi (1180) followed by Maharashtra (866). West Bengal (497), Tamil Nadu(407), Andhra Pradesh(319), Karnataka (232) and Gujarat(185) also reported comparatively a large number of companies registered during the month. The seven States put together accounted for nearly 82% of the total number of companies registered during the month.

The highest number of companies was registered under the industrial classification “Manufacturing”(1295) followed by Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services (1208) and Wholesale and Retail Trade and Restaurants and Hotels (894). Under other industrial classifications, the companies registered were Construction(572), Community, Social and Personal Services(211), Transport, Storage and Communication (183), Agriculture and Allied Activities (75) and Mining and Quarrying (42).

In June 2005, 370 non-government companies, each with an authorized capital of Rs. 50 lakh or above, were registered as compared to 227 in the same month of 2004.

The number of companies limited by shares which ceased functioning during June, 2005 was 237. They either went into liquidation or their names were struck off under Section 560 of the Companies Act. Out of them, 12 were public limited and 225 private limited companies. Their number was 184 in Delhi, 35 in Tamil Nadu, 7 in Rajasthan, 4 in Assam, 2 each in Nagaland and Pondicherry and one each in Meghalaya, Karnataka and West Bengal.
