godowns of fci and cwc for storage of foodgrains

Food Corporation of India has 1599 godowns with a storage capacity of 261.21 Lakh MTs as on March 1, 2005. The highest number of godowns of FCI are in Punjab, 498, with a storage capacity of 79.26 lakh MTs. There are 137 godowns in Haryana with a capacity of 23.02 lakh MTs owned or hired by FCI, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 133 godowns with a capacity of 33.75 lakh MTs. Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) owns 479 godowns with a total capacity of 100.02 lakh MTs.

The godowns with both FCI and CWC are maintained regularly. The expenditure incurred by FCI on repairs and maintenance during 2004-05 was Rs. 3611.73 lakhs against Rs. 3266.93 lakhs during the previous year.

Central Warehousing Corporation incurred an expenditure of Rs. 864.53 lakhs in 2004-05 for annual repairs and maintenance of godowns against Rs. 344.74 lakhs in 2003-04 and Rs. 843.85 lakh in 2002-03.

Government has released an amount of Rs. 1610.49 lakhs to FCI for construction of new godowns in 2004-05. New godowns being constructed by FCI are located at Leh, Badgaon, Kupwara, Salem, Tumkur, Keylong, Lunglei and Lawnglatei. The cost of construction of new godowns by CWC during the same period is Rs. 4516.54 lakhs.
