It has been decided that Goa will be the permanent venue for the International Film Festival of India, said Shri Afzal Amanullah, Joint Secretary (Films), Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Director , Directorate of Film Festivals , while addressing a press conference in Nunbai today. Talking about the 36th International Film Festival of India 2005 to be held in Goa from November 24 to December 4 ,2005, Shri Amannulah said the competition section had been expanded this year to include films from Africa and Latin America, apart from showcasing latest cinematic trends in Asia. The selection process had started and 16 films would be shown in the competition section, said the Festival Director.
This year onwards the Festival would be introducing a new segment called NFA Gold, said Shri Amanullah. The section each year would focus on the film that won the Presidents Gold Medal 50 years ago. This year two feature films are been screened in this sectionShyamchi Aai and Mirza Ghalib. That won the award respectively in the years 1953 and 1954. Smt. Vanmala Devi who is 90 years old and played the role of Shyams mother will attend the festival, said the Festival Director. This segment is part of a Special Section on cinema this section will showcase films that have used music as content and will highlight the rich Indian music tradition, he added.
About 3000 delegates, foreign and Indian, were expected to be registered for the festival, which will also include Cinema of the World, foreign retrospective of film on Isabelle Huppert, a tribute to Ismail Merchant, recent films from Iran and student films from Germany. Cinema of the World section will include about 45 films from around 35 countries made in the last 2 years and will include films which have won international awards or have earned critical acclaim, revealed the Festival Director.
Two films from the Indian Panorama will be selected by the feature film jury of this section which is headed by veteran filmmaker Shri M.S.Sathyu . These films would represent India in the IFFI competition section., said Shri Amanullah. This section would also include a collection of 12 best popular feature films from all over the country as recommended by the Film Federation of India , he added. The IFFI will also include a Film Bazaar, retrospective of Hrishikesh Mukherjee films , homage to Shri Sunil Dutt and Shri Gemini Ganeshan, as part of which two films Reshma Aur Shera and Parthiban Kanavu would be screened.
