Eleventh International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer was celebrated today to commemorate the date of signing of Montreal Protocol on Substances that depletes the Ozone Layer. Minister of State for Environment & Forests, Shri Namo Narain Meena in his inaugural address said that over the last 12 years, India has implemented more than 300 projects for phasing out about 11000 ODP tons of production and 12000 ODP tons of consumption of ODS. He attributed this success to the active role taken by industries, government authorities, technical institutions, experts, NGOs and said that India has complied with its commitment under the Montreal Protocol successfully. He also added that by adopting prohibition of financing or retro-financing by banks and financial institutions in India for investments in ODS based technology and notifying Ozone Depleting Substances (Regulations and Control) Rules 2000, dependence of Indian industry on ODSs has been reduced substantially.
Shri Meena also said that various regional initiatives with countries like Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh have been taken relating to Montreal Protocol implementation and expressed hope that it would help in phasing out consumption of ODSs and other similar environmentally harmful chemicals in a cost effective manner.
On this occasion, various awards were distributed for exemplary work in the field of afforestation, wasteland development, taxonomy, Hindi writing on environment and related subjects.
Shri Meena also inaugurated an exhibition of Ozone friendly products and also released a poster, brochure, sticker and 7th Edition of The Montreal Protocol: Indias Success Story. He also presented the album containing a stamp, first day cover and brochure to Ms. Soumya Saxena, first prize winner of the painting competitions conducted by Ministry of Environment & Forests.
