The US Secretary of Defence, Mr Donald Rumsfeld telephoned Defence Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee last evening and expressed his condolences and solidarity in this hour of grief for the earthquake-affected people of India and assured all help from the United States. Shri Pranab Mukherjee thanked him and gave an account of the situation, which he said was under control. Mr Rumsfeld was informed that relief and rescue operations are continuing with resources mustered from within the country. Mr Rumsfeld was also informed about relief supplies being sent to Pakistan, for which he expressed his appreciation.
