In a bid to develop eco-tourism destinations, the Ministry of Tourism has identified following beaches for the development. Om Beach and Tagore Beach (Karnataka), Ernakulam, Kovalam, Marina, Alappuzha and Kochi (Kerala), Sindhudurg, Konkan Riviera Circuit and Vijaydurg (Maharashtra), Mahabalipuram, Kanyakumari-Vivekananda, Muttom Beach, Thikkurichi Beach (Tamil Nadu), Somnath (Gujarat) and Puri in Orissa. More than 278 crore have been sanctioned for various eco-tourism projects during 2002- 2005 which include sanctions for above said projects also.
The Ministry has taken all care to protect fragile environment in and around the beaches. Eco-tourism guidelines have been circulated to States and to tourism industry. They have been told that the conservation of wildlife and bio-diversity should be given highest priority while developing various facilities. Main objective should offer natural surrounding for the urban tourists, which they miss in their habitat.
The Ministry of Tourism has identified few more eco-tourism projects for the development during 2005-06. These include Singoor Sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh, Dibrugarh-Passighat-Dayong Ering Wildlife Sanctuary and Likabali-Basar-Along-Boleng-Yemburg-Passighat in Arunachal Pradesh, Dubri to Silcharand, Manas-Kaziranga Sanctuary in Assam, Bastar-Bacheli in Chhattisgarh, Saputara, Junagad-Veravali-Porbandar-Dwarka in Gujarat, Mandi Circuit, Chamba Circuit in Himachal Pradesh, Bekal, Northern Beach Circuit and Munnar in Kerala, Tura, Shillong-Cherrapunji-Jowal-Mawaphlong-Tura Williamnagar-Jokhram-Jowai in Meghalaya, Gopalpur in Orissa, Rangpo-Lamaatas-Rumteck, West District Trekking Circuit and Lamatas-Dzongu-Rumtek in Sikkim and Gangariya-Govindghat in Uttaranchal.
