The Minister of Rural Development Dr.Raghuvansh Prasad Singh has asked the Government machinery to ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of various rural development programmes. He was addressing the Third Regional Workshop of the National Level Monitors (NLMs) of the Ministry in New Delhi. He said that there has been frequent reporting in the media about shortcomings and loops holes in the implementation process and advised the NLMs to submit realistic reports based on their personal observations. The Minister suggested that the good works that have taken place could also be documented and disseminated as success stories among the masses. Dr.Singh describing NLMs as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the Ministry said that it is their duty to provide effective and unbiased reporting for the benefit of the target groups of more than 18 lakh rural development projects catering to 6 lakh villages of the country.

The two days workshop which concluded in capital today was convened to facilitate the Ministry in having first hand information on ground realities from the NLMs. In all 86 NLMs who have visited the same number of districts in the seven States namely Jammu & Kashmir, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Bihar attended the workshop. The visits by these NLMs covered 362 Blocks and 1535 villages during which they had inspected more than 4000 assets created under various rural development programmes.
