The Union Cabinet today gave its approval to amend to Fundamental Rules (FR) 56 for providing a tenure of minimum two years to the posts of Defence Secretary, Home Secretary, Director (IB), Secretary, Research and Analysis Wing and Director (CBI) and if such an officer is attaining the age of superannuation before the completion of two years, he would be allowed an extension of service beyond the age of superannuation for enabling him to complete the tenure of two years. To provide for this dispensation, it will be necessary to amend FR 56 (R) by substituting the existing fourth proviso as under :-
Provided also that the Central Government may, if considered necessary in public interest to do so, give extension in service to the Cabinet Secretary, Defence Secretary, Home Secretary, Director, Intelligence Bureau, Secretary Research and Analysis Wing and Director, Central Bureau of Investigation, for such periods as it may deep proper, on case to case basis, subject to the condition that the total term of the incumbents of the above post who are given such extension in service, does not exceed two years.
