The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers (Base 1986-87 = 100) increased by two points and one point respectively during August 2005 to stand at 352 points for Agricultural Labourers and 354 points for Rural Labourers.
The rise and fall in index varied from state to state. In case of Agricultural Labourers 14 states reflected an increase in indices ranging between 1 to 5 points while in 3 states it showed a decrease ranging between 1 to 3 points. The indices remained constant in three States.
In case of Rural Labourers 15 states reflected an increase ranging between 1 to 4 points while in three states it showed a decrease ranging between 1 to 3 points. The indices remained constant in two states.
Karnataka, Meghalaya and Orissa experienced the sharpest increase of 5 points in case of Agricultural Labourers. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Orissa showed highest increase of 4 points in case of Rural Labourers. The increase has been mainly due to increase in prices of rice, jawar, arhal dal, milk, onions, dry chillies, vegetables and fruits, sugar, gur, and bus fare. On the other hand, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in respect of Agricultural Labourers and Kerala in respect of Rural Labourers recorded a maximum decrease of 3 points each. The fall has been mainly due to decrease in prices of rice, jawar, coconut oil, fresh fish, vegetables & fruits, pan leaf and firewood.
Meghalaya with 373 points figured at the top of the index table for Agricultural Labourers while Haryana and Punjab with 372 points each figured at top in case of Rural Labourers. Manipur remained at the bottom of the index for both Agricultural and Rural Labourers with 322 points each.
Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL and CPI-RL decreased from 3.55% and 3.82% respectively in July 2005 to 3.23% and 3.21% respectively in August 2005. Respective rates of inflation during August, 2004 were 3.02% and 3.00%
