7 steel projects to be ready by jan - 2007

7 Steel Projects currently under implementation and with the Project Monitoring Division, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, watching their progress, are expected to be ready by January 2007. With anticipated dates of commissioning as well as anticipated cost estimates worked out, these projects are said to achieve the deadline, as per the latest Flash Report of the Ministry on Central Sector Projects, costing Rs.100 crore and above.

The first project to be ready will be the Completion of the Repair of Blast Furnace No.4 of the Rourkela Steel Plant in Orissa. Approved in May 2004, at a original cost of Rs.95.64 crore, its anticipated cost now stands at Rs.118.32 crore. An expenditure of over Rs.73 crore has already been incurred and the project is now set for completion by October this year.

The next project to be ready is the Rebuilding of the Coke Oven Battery No.1 of SAIL also at the Rourkela Plant. Approved in March 2003, at a original cost of Rs.112.39 crore, the current anticipated date of commissioning of the project is March 2006, a delay of three months. Nearly Rs.42 crore expenditure has been incurred on the project.

The third project also of SAIL is the Installation of the Bloom Caster with associated facilities at the Durgapur Steel Plant in West Bengal. Approved in May 2004, at a original cost of Rs.271.41 crore and the cost not having been revised, the project is expected to be ready by May 2006, as scheduled, according to the monitoring reports. Over Rs.35 crore has already been spent on the project.

Another project also of SAIL with the date of commissioning having been delayed by six months to July 2006, is the Technology Upgradation of Blast Furnace No.7 of the Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhatisgarh. Approved in January 2005 at a original cost of Rs.107.41 crore, the anticipated cost of the project has now risen to Rs.170.41 crore, with a minimal expenditure of Rs.15 lakh incurred so far.

The Coke Oven Battery-4 (Phase –1) of the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. Vishakapatnam, approved in December 2003, at a estimated cost of Rs.303 crore, is expected to be commissioned as scheduled in December 2006. While an expenditure of nearly Rs.85 crore has already been incurred on the project, its original cost stands revised downwards to Rs.286.83 crore.

The rebuilding of Coke Oven Battery-5 of SAIL at Bokaro - Jharkhand, approved in December 2004 with a original cost of Rs.219.04 crore, is expected to be commissioned as scheduled in January 2007. With its original cost revised downwards to Rs 198.84 crore, the project has already incurred an expenditure of Rs.8.50 crore.

Another rebuilding project i.e. Coke Oven Battery-5 also of SAIL at Bhilai, Chhatisgarh, approved in December 2004, at a cost of Rs.198.84 crore is also expected to be ready by January 2007. The anticipated cost of the project now stands Rs.219.04 crore, with an expenditure of nearly Rs.3 crore already incurred.
