42 more projects taken up for monitoring progress

The Flash Report on Central Sector Projects costing Rs.100 crore and above for July, of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation says, 42 more projects have been taken up for monitoring their progress. These include 23 from Road Transport and Highways, 12 from Telecom, 5 from Railways and 1 each from Steel and Power Sectors. The Report contains information on the status of 349 Central Sector Projects, out of which 45 are mega projects, costing Rs.1000 crore and above.

5 Projects, 2 each from Petroleum and Railways, 1 from Road Transport and Highways have been taken off from the monitoring process of the Ministry, during the month under report, following their completion. The Report also pointed out that 14 projects i.e. 1 in Fertilizer, 4 Petroleum, 6 Power, 1 Telecom and 2 in Road Transport Sectors have reported further delays upto 14 months during the period under review.

In Petroleum, 4 projects have reported additional delays upto two months. However, two projects i.e. the Chennai-Trichy-Madurai Product Pipeline and Refinery Modernization of the BPCL in Mumbai,are stated to be complete and poised for commissioning soon. The Project “Conversion of KBPL to Crude” of the Indian Oil Corporation, is also ready and expected to be made operational,alongwith the Panipat Refinery Expansion, currently under delay for two additional months, on account of late supply of equipment. This Project is, however, expected to become operational in December.

In the Power Sector, the completion schedule of 6 projects, has slipped upto 14 months. Two projects, i.e. the Tarapur III & IV Transmission System and the Madurai-Thiruvananthapuram 400 KV DC Line, both of Power Grid are on the verge of completion. The commissioning of the Tehri Dam, as well as its Hydro Power Project has slipped by 8 months, due to several reasons including, delay in the completion of spillway chute, Non-placement of rip-rap material along the dam slopes fully, non-completion of assembly of rotor of unit-1 and its placement in stator. No specific reasons have been indicated with regard to slippages in the other projects.

In Road Transport, two projects are currently encountering slippage upto three months due to unspecified reasons.
