33% increase in scheduled caste job seekers

Thursday, September 22, 2005

The percentage of job seekers belonging to Scheduled Castes has increased by about 33 per cent during the past decade. According to an analysis of Employment Exchange statistics from 1994-2003 by the Directorate General of Employment and Training, the SC job seekers increased from 49.9 lakh in 1994 to 66.3 lakh in 2003. This has been possible due to a number of measures taken by the Government. These include maintenance of the registration cards of SC job seekers separately, ensuring that the vacancy notifications from public sector establishments invariably indicate details regarding reservation and providing vocational guidance and imparting recruitment training to them. Employment exchanges have also been sponsoring suitable SC candidates against unreserved vacancies and have been enlisting cooperation of SC associations in locating suitable candidates.

The analysis reveals that the educated SC job seekers have a better chance in placement. Their percentage to total SC job seekers has increased from 56.3 percent in 1994 to 69.5 per cent in 2003. Out of 19.2 thousand placements made of SC job seekers during 2003 about 14.9 thousand were educated. The number of total SC job seekers has also increased from 28.1 lakh in 1994 to 46.1 lakh in 2003.

Tamil Nadu had the maximum 11.5 lakh SC job seekers during 2003 among the States. However, maximum number of placements (5.0 thousand) were in Gujarat. Maximum number of 1.1 lakh SC job seekers registered during the year were in Maharashtra.
