There had been a long felt need for promoting professional understanding and technical cooperation among the Government accounting organizations in the region. With this objective in mind, the idea of forming an Association of Government Accounts Organization of Asia (AGAOA) was conceptualized and deliberated upon at a meeting of the heads of Government Accounting organizations in South Asia held in Colombo, Sri Lanka in February 2004 and the Charter of AGAOA was signed by the representatives of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The AGAOA was formed in the year 2004. The first Assembly of the Association was held in Murree, Pakistan in September 2004, which was inaugurated by Mr. Shaukat Aziz, Prime Minister of Pakistan.

The key objective of AGAOA is to promote closer collaboration among government accountants in the region with a view to harmonize accounting practices using international standards and facilitate research, training and human resource development in this area.

Besides the heads of the government accounting organizations of the member countries, a few other delegates from countries such as Indonesia, Philippines, Afghanistan etc. are also expected to attend.
