Three Cavalry, one of the oldest, Cavalry Regiment of the Indian army celebrates it's battle honour 'Asal Uttar -1965' today. The lineage of the regiment dates back to 1841, when the torch bearers fought many glorious battles overseas and returned with accolades.

On 09 and 10 September 1965, Pakistani Patton tanks thrust across the Sutlej in Khemkaran sector, spearheading to capture the Beas Bridge. Around the village of Asal Uttar, the regiment destroyed 103 Patton Tanks and reasserted its regiment motto of 'Har Maidan Fateh' in the hard fought battle.

In recognition of the gallant action, the regiment was bestowed with the battle honour of "Asal Uttar" and theatre honour "Punjab". The then Commandant, Lt Col Salim Caleb (later on Maj Gen) was awarded the coveted Maha Vir Chakra. Besides this, Regiment got one Vir Chakra, eight Sena Medals, fourteen Mentioned-in-Dispatches and three Commendation Cards.

“Asal Uttar Day" was celebrated by the regiment with great fervour and gaiety attended by a number of retired officers, junior commissioned officers and other ranks including those who took part in the 1965 battle. The celebrations included paying obeisance at the Mandir and Gurudwara, Special Sainik Sammelan, wreath laying and paying homage to the martyrs.
