apprises him of progress made on inter-linking of rivers

Shri P.R. Dasmunsi, Union Minister of Water Resources called on the President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to apprise him about the latest progress pertaining to inter-linking of rivers, based on the Common Minimum Programme of UPA, where it has been stated “The UPA government will make a comprehensive assessment of the feasibility of linking the rivers of the country starting with the south-bound rivers. This assessment will be done in a fully consultative manner”. The Minister informed the President that a group for technical consensus plan, has already been constituted and they are expected to give their observations within 31st October 2004. However, the Minister made it clear that the UPA Government and its CMP did give priority to the south- bound peninsular rivers in the first phase of the programme.

The Minister has already advised the NWDA (National Water Development Agency) to complete the feasibility report of balance 18 links out of the 30 links before 31st December 2005.

Shri Dasmunsi will be meeting the Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan during December 2004, to discuss about the links whose feasibility studies have been completed by the NWDA. The Minister further apprised the President that he will be making a full presentation of the upto date progress, on the inter-linking project before the Government, on 11th October 2004.
