The State Governments have resolved, to revamp and strengthen their statistical set-ups so as to help build a most modern and credible National Statistical System. This was agreed to, at the just concluded Meeting of the State Chief Secretaries, organised here, as part of the Conference of Central and State Statistical Organisations. The Chief Secretaries unanimously decided to strengthen their System by suitably empowering the Directorates of Economics and Statistics. The States will also be assisted by the Centre in Information networking, Capacity building and Revamping of their Statistical organisations. The revamping will be based on a Report of the World Bank assisted Study of the present system and Method of Collection of data etc.

The Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Shri Oscar Fernandes urged the Chief Secretaries to find alternate methods of data collection on the socio-economic indicators, using modern information technologies and statistical techniques. He told them to take into account the suggestions and recommendations made by the National Statistical Commission, for improving the reliability and credibility of official statistics. The States should evolve a better method of coordination for collection, timely processing and dissemination of data, on areas of critical importance, he said.

The Cabinet Secretary, Shri B.K.Chaturvedi, who chaired the meeting, underscored the expanding demand for data for national, state and local government policy and planning. Mr. Chaturvedi told the Chief Secretaries that economic reforms, coupled with employment generation and poverty removal initiatives of the Centre, demand adequate and accurate data in time, for the formation of development polices and their implementation.
