spending limits of railways in 2004-2005

Indian Railways have been given a savings target of Rs. 500 crores in the current fiscal year 2004-2005 by setting lower spending limits. This forms part of expenditure control exercise of the Government.

A lump sum amount of savings target in proportion to Budget Grants has been fixed for each Zonal Railway.

The total Budget Grant for all the sixteen Zonal Railways and the Kolokata Metro is Rs. 32860 crores. Out of this, spending limit has been fixed at Rs. 32360 crores, saving Rs. 500 crores.

The Zonal Railways and the Kolkata Metro have been directed to take the spending limit as the working budget for all purposes. They have also been asked to make all out efforts to achieve the savings target through exchequer control mechanism as also various economy directives and constant monitoring.
