Indian Railways have planned to set up Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) through amendment to the Railway Act, 1989.
The proposed RLDA will take up all the tasks connected with property development.
Draft Note for the Cabinet to this effect alongwith amendment to the Railways Act, 1989 has been sent to the Ministry of Law and Justice for vetting and clearance.
The Railways have 4.23 lakh hectares of land, out of which 22000 hectares are utilised.
The unutilized land and air-space on railways land can be developed for commercial exploitation in partnership with the private sector, keeping in view futuristic use of such lands for railways, to generate additional revenues for accelerating rail infrastructure development and upgradation projects.
