The International Day of Older Persons is being celebrated today. The day broke in the capital with a "Walk for Health" by senior citizens around India Gate to promote active ageing. The walk was flagged off by the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Smt. Meira Kumar. More than 2000 senior citizens from various parts of the capital took part. They were lustily cheered by students and young volunteers. The participants included persons upto 85 years old. Smt. Kumar also released balloons on the occasion to mark the day.

Earlier addressing the participants, Smt. Meira Kumar said that older persons are an integral part of the society and should not feel isolated. She said that her Ministry is actively promoting empowerment of older persons so that they can acquire better control over their lives and participate in decision making.

The walk for health was organised by National Institute of Social Defence, Anugraha – an NGO working for the welfare of elderly persons and other NGOs, resident welfare associations, Old Age Homes.
