Scouts and Guides movement play a crucial role in womens empowerment by inculcating the spirit of discipline and dedication to duty, said Minister of State for Railways, Shri R. Velu, here today. Addressing a glittering function organized at the National Rail Museum to celebrate 75 years of World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), Shri Velu said that there are more than ten million people as Members of WAGGGS all over the world and the Movement helps the needy and deprived sections of the society to overcome difficult situations.
Highlighting the role played by Indian Railways in promoting Scouts and Guides in the country, Shri Velu stated that Indian Railways is an integral part of Scouts and Guides Movement. Giving away Lifetime Achievement Awards to five members of the Movement including the Financial Commissioner, Railway Board, Smt. Vijayalakshmi Viswanathan, the Minister stated that achievements of Girl Guides and Scouts in the country show that they are second to none. The Minister also gave away awards to 75 members of the Movement from all over the Zonal Railways.
Earlier, the Minister inaugurated an exhibition of handicraft and rare historical photographs depicting the history and evolution of Scouts and Guides movement in the country. The highlight of the function was a colourful cultural programme on the theme of national integration presented by the members of the Movement and the tiny tots of railway fraternity. The function was attended by Smt. Malliga Velu, wife of Minister of State for Railways, Shri R. Velu, Chairman, Railway Board, Shri R.K. Singh and other senior officials of the Railway Board and Northern Railway.
