RITES Ltd., a public sector unit of Indian Railways, has signed two contracts with Myanma Railways for supply of 11 Metre Gauge locomotives along- with capital spares; and supply of 36 coaches of various types along with capital spares.
The supplies will be made against EXIM Banks Line of Credit extended to the Union of Myanmar especially for development of passenger services on Yangon Mandalay trunk line.
RITES had earlier supplied 10 in-service locomotives to Myanmar in 2000. The locomotives under the present supply will be an improved version incorporating the state-of-the-art technological features like AC/DC transmission, driver-friendly cab, improved superstructure, couplers and brake system. The locomotive will also be fitted with fuel-sufficient engine, which will provide approximately 7 per cent saving in the fuel consumption.
The scope of supply of 36 coaches will include coaches of various types being 22 ordinary class, 12 upper class and 2 brake vans designed specifically to suit the requirements of Myanma Railways with state-of-the-art technological features.
The locomotives will be manufactured at the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi and coaches at the Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala, the Production Units of Indian Railways.
