Strategies and programmes are to be evolved for revamping the Indian Statistical System, in line with the recommendations of the National Statistical Commission. The Commission has made more than 600 recommendations, out of which, the government has implemented more than 200 of them so far. The Commission has been set up to suggest ways and means of making Indias Statistical System most modern and reliable. This was announced by Shri J.Hari Narayan, Secretary in the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation here today, while opening a Conference of Central and State Statistical Organisations, arranged to discuss the policy issues in particular and other measures in general, for strengthening the State Statistical Systems and their coordination with the Centre.
Shri Hari Narayan said that a meeting of State Chief Secretaries organised as part of the Conference will be addressed by the Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Shri Oscar Fernandes on Wednesday. The meeting also to be addressed by the Cabinet Secretary Shri B.K.Chaturvedi will discuss mainly, the short-comings in the policy concerning the System and Standards as well as Central- State Coordination for strengthening the same. Shri Hari Narayan said, the Conference and the Chief Secretaries Meeting provide a Forum for in-depth discussions on various issues hindering the strengthening of the system, which is of great national interest.
During the three days of the Conference, the discussions will cover statistical system relating to, Agriculture and live stock, Health, Industry, Housing, Education, Labour, Road transport etc., with a view to planning strategies for modernising the system. The Secretary added that though Indias Statistical System is the largest in the world, the vast variety and diversity in the federal polity, underscores the need to make the system more accurate, reliable and authentic, to make it one of the most modern statistical system in the globalised world.
