The Fertilizer Industry is a major energy consuming sector and there are a number of processes where heat exchangers are being currently used. Keeping in view the industry requirement, a necessarily for achieving reduction of energy consumption for production of fertiliser in the country both for natural gas and naphtha based plants was felt very necessary by the Government. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has succeeded in achieving the goal in this direction. A pilot plant facility for innovative heat exchanger developed by the Chemical Engineering Department of IIT, Delhi will be inaugurated by Shri Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister of Chemicals, Fertilizers and Steel, tomorrow in New Delhi. The preliminary results of the above pilot plant reveals that it would be a great discovery in the country for the benefit of fertiliser industry on energy saving front. Its utilities would be multifarious in fertiliser plants and would yield energy savings to the tune of 15 to 20 per cent with about 70 per cent reduction in heat exchanger area as compared to conventional heat exchanger.
