relocation of the national commission on population

Friday, October 15, 2004

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its approval for the shifting of the National Commission on Population, with posts, from the Planning Commission to the Department of Family Welfare. Approval has also been given for reconstitution of the Janasankhya Sthirata Kosh (JSK); and the creation of a Convergence Policy Group in the Planning Commission.

Since the Department of Family Welfare is the nodal Department for activities concerning population stabilization, and the mandate of the National Commission on Population is to monitor and review these activities, the proposed modalities would improve inter-sectoral convergence, and also contribute to attainment of goals of the National Population Policy, 2000.

The JSK in the Ministry of Health and FW was registered in June 2003 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The Convergence Policy Group shall ensure inter-sectoral convergence for the Family Welfare Programme. The proposed activities would be completed within three months.
