Indian Railways carried 284.89 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue earning freight during the first half of the current fiscal year ending September 2004 compared to 266.43 MTs of such traffic during the corresponding period of the previous year, representing an increase of 18.46 MTs. This also recorded an increase of 3.85 MTs over the target of 281.04 MTs for the period.
Excellent performance of revenue freight indicates buoyancy in the core sector of the national economy.
The annual freight target has been pegged at 580 MTs.
During September 2004, a total of 47.78 MTs of revenue freight was loaded compared to 43.39 MTs of freight during the corresponding month of the previous year, representing an increase of 4.39 MTs. This was higher by 2.14 MTs over the target of 45.64 MTs for the month.
