railways earnings from freight traffic up in april-septemebr 2004

Indian Railways earned up 14332.32 crores from 284.80 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue earning freight traffic during the first half of the current fiscal year ending September 2004 compared to Rs. 13159.82 crores from 266.43 MTs of such traffic during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering an increase of 8.91 per cent.

Of the total earnings, Rs. 6070.49 crores came from transportation of 128.66 MTs of coal followed by Rs. 526.95 crores from 19.81 MTs of raw material to steel plants, Rs. 698.10 crores from 6.75 MTs of finished iron and steel, Rs. 664.71 crores from 17.58 MTs of iron ore for exports, Rs. 1181.66 crores from 25.95 MTs of cement, Rs. 1608.91 crores from 23.38 MTs of foodgrains, Rs. 1614.17 crores from 13.59 MTs of fertilizers, Rs. 1308.59 crores from 15.58 MTs of Petroleum Oil and Lubricant (POL), and Rs. 1658.74 crores from 3351 MTs of other goods.

The revenue earning freight traffic, during the period, increased by 8.76 per cent in Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKMs) in millions from 181204 million NTKMs in 2003-2004 to 197070 million NTKMs in 2004-2005.

Earnings per million tonne increased by 1.88 per cent from Rs. 49.39 crores in 2003-2004 to Rs. 50.32 crores in the current fiscal year. Earnings in paise per net tonne kilometre increased by 0.14 per cent from 72.62 paise in 2003-2004 to 72.73 paise in the current financial year.
