The Railways registered 84040 claims cases in 2003-2004 compared to 76311 such cases in 2002-2003, recording an increase of 10.1 per cent.
The number of claims disposed of was 68762 in 2003-2004 compared to 60734 in 2002-2003, registering an increase of 13.2 per cent.
The gross amount paid on claims including court cases was Rs. 24.45 croes in 2003-2004 compared to Rs. 22.12 crores paid in 2002-2003, recording an increase of 10.5 per cent. This was mainly due to settlement of more cases and payment of higher value claims of oil companies, which was 26.4 per cent higher than the previous year.
The pending cases at the end of March 2004 was 1.9 per cent less than the previous year.
During 2003-2004, payment on account of theft and pilferage contributed 79.5 per cent in the overall claims settlement, which was 79.9 per cent.
In the fiscal year ending March 2004, the number of reopened cases was 32.8 per cent higher than the previous year.
