The Ministry of Food Processing Industries is operating a scheme to motivate the food processing sector to adopt and implement various safety standards. The mechanism to ensure food safety and standard is total quality management. Certifications like ISO-9000, ISO-14000, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Hygienic Practices (GHP) are necessary for the food processing industries to face the competition in international trade in the post-WTO era.
Under this scheme, assistance in the form of grant-in-aid is provided to the Central and State Government organisations, IITs and universities to the extent of 50 per cent of the total project cost in general areas and 75 per cent in difficult areas. The ceiling is Rs.10 lakh and Rs.15 lakh respectively. For all other implementing agencies, the grant-in-aid is available up to 33 per cent of the project cost subject to a maximum limit of Rs.10 lakh for general areas and 50 per cent subject to a maximum of Rs.15 lakh for difficult areas to implement total quality management.
