Five workers of Bhilai Steel Plant will be conferred jointly with the most prestigious Shram Ratna Award for 2003 by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here on Monday. S/Sh. Mahender Kumar Gulati, Ramji Rangari, Sandeep Kumar Borkar, Mubarak Ali and Sunil Kumar Singh will receive the award for outstanding caliber and major innovations in the Rail and Structural Mill of the Bhilai Steel Plant that has resulted in the recurring financial benefit of Rs.54 crore per annum. They will receive from the Prime Minister a `Sanad’ and a cash award of Rs. two lakh.

The Prime Minister will also give away two Shram Bushan Awards each for 2003 and three awards for 2002 to 12 workers for exceptional contribution in productivity/ production and for innovative abilities of high order. These workers belong to BHEL, Southern Railway, Bhilai Steel Plant and NTPC. Each award carries a cash prize of Rs. one lakh and a citation.

53 other workers will receive Shram Vir and Shram Devi/ Shram Shri awards for continuous record of dedicated service and significant contribution towards productivity. Each Shram Vir award carryies a cash prize of Rs.60,000/- and a `Sanad’ while each Shram Shri/ Shram Devi award carries a cash award of Rs.40,000/- and a `Sanad’.

Each year 17 Shram Awards are announced on Independence Day to workers of Departmental Undertakings and Public Sector Undertakings of the Central and State Governments in recognition of their distinguished performance, innovative abilities, outstanding contribution in the field of productivity and exhibition of exceptional courage and presence of mind. These awards were instituted in 1985.
