power minister releases souvenir on golden jubilee of nangal hydel channel

The Union Power Minister, Shri P.M. Sayeed today released a Souvenir to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of operation of Nangal Hydel Channel. This channel which is a part of the Bhakra Beas Project was dedicated to the nation by the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1954. The Union Minister lauded the present standards of maintenance and operation level of the Bhakra Beas Management Board.

The Nangal Hydel Channel carries water for irrigation and drinking purposes to the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and Chandigarh. It has been running without any closure for the last 50 years.

It has a designed discharge capacity of 12,500 cusecs. The power generation on this channel started at Ganguwal Power House & Kotla Power House in the year 1955 & 1956 respectively much before the completion of Bhakra Dam in 1963. These Power Houses generate more than 1228 million units of power annually.
