Indian Railways saved Rs. 224.32 crores in working expenses during the first five months of the current fiscal year ending August 2004. The Railways incurred expenses of Rs. 12484.15 crores compared to the budgetary target of working expenses of Rs. 12708.47 crores. The Railways also earned Rs. 146.93 crores more than the budgetary target for the period. The total earnings were Rs. 18088.40 crores compared to the budget proportion of Rs. 17941.4 crores. In the process, a sum of Rs. 371.25 crores over and above the budgetary target accrued to the Railways.

The number of passengers booked also increased by 118.16 millions. A total of 2219.65 million passengers were booked compared to 2101.49 million passengers during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Punctuality of Mail and Express trains on broad gauge increased to 93.1 per cent from the target of 90 per cent and on metre gauge to 95.6 per cent from the target of 95 per cent.
