The all-India CPI(UNME) for September, 2004 is 437 which has not shown any change from previous month i.e. August, 2004. At the group level, the indices for September, 2004 when compared to last month i.e. August 2004, have increased by 0.45 percent in respect of "Miscellaneous" group and decreased by 0.23 percent in respect of "Food, Beverages & Tobacco" group. With the corresponding all-India index for September, 2003 being 420, the index for the month of September, 2004 has shown a rise of 4.0% over a year.The all-India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees CPI(UNME) on base 1984-85=100, for the month of September, 2004 was released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation here today, together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India.
The CPI(UNME) for all-India and 59 selected urban centres in the country for September, 2004; together with the indices for the preceding five months (see Statement I). The CPI(UNME) for September, 2004 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for September, 2003 are given below:-

A comparison of CPI(UNME) for September, 2004 in respect of 59 selected urban centres with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely September, 2003 (see Statement II). Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from 1.1 to 8.6 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Asansol and the least in the case of Madurai. The increases are 0.0 to 2.0 percent for 8 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 27 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 20 centres and 6.1 percent and
above, for 4 centres. As many as 33 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the all-India figure of 4.0 percent while 24 centres have recorded a higher percentage increase as compared to the all-India average.
