The Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss has said that a National Programme on Diabetes will be started soon. Quoting WHO he said that there was danger of India becoming the Diabetes capital of the world. By 2010 there will be 37 million diabetic patients and by 2025 it is likely to reach 70 million. The Minister was delivering the inaugral address at the Diabetes Health Mela organised by the Delhi Diabetic Research Centre in the Capital today.
The Minister expressed concern over the fact that the number of juvenile diabetes was on the rise . He said that not only the rich but also the poor were increasingly affected due to our sedentary life styles and bad food habits. For the poor the expenditure in controlling diabetes was very high. It is estimated that it would cost Rs 20 to Rs 50 per day for adults who are insulin dependent. He stressed the need to create awareness about the disease and how to prevent it. Dr Ramadoss promised the full support of his Ministry in creating awareness.
