national leprosy elimination project extended

The 2nd National Leprosy Elimination Project (NLEP) was extended has been extended for a period of 9 months from 1.4.2004 to 31.12.2004 at no extra cost. This will ensure utilization of available funds for continuity of programme, which is essential to sustain the gains achieved so far, and accelerate the pace of achieving elimination of leprosy by the year 2005. During this extended period, no changes in project components or the scope of activities are contemplated.

This decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, which met here on Wednesday.

The period of the second project was three years from April, 2001 to March, 2004 at the cost of Rs.249.80 crore. At the close of the project i.e. March 2004, an amount of Rs.38.00 crore was lying unspent resulting this extension.
