national commission on farmers

Friday, October 15, 2004

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave ex-post-facto approval for the appointment of Chairman of the National Commission on Farmers. Approval has also been given to the revised terms of reference and reconstitution of the Commission. The Minister of Agriculture & Food will introduce changes in the terms of reference or composition of the Commission, if necessary, to achieve the objectives for which the Commission has been set up.

The Commission will help in suggesting strategy for food and nutrition security, enhancing productivity, profitability of major farming systems of the country, enhanced investment in agriculture research, increased flow of rural credit to farmers, triggering agricultural growth-led economic progress, enhancing quality and cost competitiveness of farm commodities through application of frontier technology and empowerment of women in agriculture.

The new terms of reference of the Farmers’ Commission are quite comprehensive and would take care of the commitments made by the United Progressive Alliance in its Common Minimum Programme and the problems being faced by the farmers in particular and Indian agriculture in general. The Commission will submit a medium term policy for food and nutrition security overtime within the next three months and will submit its recommendations on other terms of reference as soon as practicable and in any case within a period of two years.
