nalco saves rs.600 crore from first phase expansion

The total approved cost of the first phase expansion of the public sector aluminium major National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), Orissa, was Rs.4206.58 crore. But the actual expenditure incurred in the expansion programme was Rs.3606.58 crore. Thus, the company has saved Rs.600 crore from its first phase expansion work. It has saved Rs.250 crore from the expansion of M&R complex, Rs.200 crore from smelter and 7th unit of the captive power plant (CPP) and Rs.150 crore from the 8th unit of CPP.

The 7th unit of the CPP was completed in December, 2002 and 120 pots of this smelter were commissioned in March 2003. The 8th unit of the CPP was commissioned in February 2004. With the implementation of the first phase expansion, NALCO's mining capacity has increased to 4.8 million tonnes per year (tpy), refinery capacity to 1.575 million tpy, aluminium production capacity to 3.45 lakh tpy and captive power generation to 960 mega watt.
