The index of mineral production (base year 1993-94=100) for the year 2003-04 was 147.00 (Provisional) as compared to 140.56 for the year 2002-03 showing a growth of 4.6 per cent.
Significant private investment has been made in the mining sector during the last decade. Out of 3,108 working mines in the country, nearly two-thirds i.e. 2,287 mines are in the private sector and 821 mines are in the public sector.
India is endowed with significant mineral resources and produces 89 minerals, 4 of which are fuel minerals, 11 are metallic minerals, 52 are non-metallic minerals and 22 minor minerals.
