The four National Institutes of Technical Teacher’s Training and Research (NIITTR) have now been authorized to resume conducting M. Tech Programmes which were discontinued by an order of the Ministry of Human Resource Development on April 1, 2003. These institutes are located in Chennai, Bhopal, Chandigarh and Kolkata.

The Directors have been advised to go ahead with their programmes after taking approval of their respective Board of Governors. The Directors have expressed their happiness on the decision and assured to restart the M. Tech programme from the next academic session without compromising their present level of training programmes.

It may be mentioned that the NITTTRs have some of the best academic infrastructure in the country among the premier technical institutions. The M. Tech programmes were conducted by institutes since 1982 and these courses were very popular. The Board of Governors of the Institutes were not even consulted while discontinuing the Programmes, thereby eroding their autonomy. In conformity with UPA government’s Common Minimum Programme which provides that the autonomy of the academic institutions of Higher learning will be respected, the MHRD decided to withdraw the order of April 1, 2003.
