mhrd orders probe into functioning of iias

Following representations from various quarters regarding academic, financial and administrative irregularities at the prestigious Indian Institute of Advance Study (IIAS), Shimla, the Ministry of Human Resource Development has appointed former Secretary to the Government of India and Executive Chairperson of Institute for Social Development, Shri D. Bandopadhyaya to hold inquiry into the points raised in the representations and to review the work of the Institute. Shri Bandopadhyaya will review the administrative and financial functioning of the Institute in relation to its original aims and objectives. He will probe into sanctioning of fellowships during the last three years and in particular, the sudden and unusual increase in the number of fellowships sanctioned. Shri Bandopadhayaya will probe into seminars organised or subsidized by the Institute during the last three years. He may consult eminent academicians on any matter under review and suggest remedial measures as are necessary to improve the functioning of the Institute and ensure its autonomy.

The Indian Institute of Advance Study was set up in 1965 as a registered society with the objective to conduct free and creative research into the fundamental areas of life and thought. It is located in Rashtrapati Niwas, Shimla and the building was gifted to the community of scholars by the former President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. IIAS is a residential center for research and encourages promotion of creative thought in subjects like Humanities, Indian Culture, Comparative Religion, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences etc. The Institute provides facilities for advanced consultation and collaboration besides an exhaustive library and documentation facilities. It is fully funded by the Government of India by way of grants in aid. The amount allocated to the Institute for 2004-05 is Rs.4 crore Non-Plan and Rs.2.75 crore Plan.
