Wednesday, October 27, 2004

The Union Cabinet today approved extension of tenure of the Justice Nanavati Commission of Inquiry upto December 31, 2004. The Commission of Inquiry was set up to inquire into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots which broke out in the National Capital Territory of Delhi and other parts of the country in the wake of the assassination of the then Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi.

The first sitting of the Commission was held on October 3, 2000. The Commission could not complete the inquiry assigned to it within the prescribed time-limit, and its tenure had to be extended from time to time. The extended tenure of the Commission is due to expire on November 2, 2004. The Commission is likely to complete the inquiry by December 31, 2004.
