Government will take all possible steps to equip the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) with modern arms, communication systems and other facilities. The Home Minister, Shri Shivraj Patil said this while speaking at a function organized in connection with the forty-third Raising Day of the ITBP here today. He said that the Force has been performing high risk duties in very difficult conditions and its requirements will have to be met for further improving its operational efficiency. ITBP maintains vigil on the border through forward posts situated at the heights between 9000 and 18000 feet above the sea level in temperatures ranging from minus 10 to minus 40 degrees Celsius. The Home Minister said that the valour and skill displayed by ITBP personnel , particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, has been exemplary in meeting the challenges posed by terrorism. Shri Patil appreciated the work being done by ITBP in the field of disaster management and as part of U.N. peace keeping forces. He asked the Force to remain prepared to face new challenges including nuclear disasters.
In his welcome address, the Director General, ITBP, Shri K.J.Singh said that the Force has recently been assigned the duty of guarding the Indo-China border in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. It is deployed in the extremely hazardous Himalayan terrain between the Karakoram pass and Lipulekh on the India-Nepal border.
Earlier, the Home Minister inspected the impressive and colourful Raising Day parade of the ITBP. He also took salute at the march past in which meticulously turned out contingents from various field formations of the Force participated. Shri Patil also presented to officers and jawans Presidents Police Medals for Gallantry, Police Medals for Gallantry, Police Medals for Distinguished Service and Presidents Police Medals for Meritorious Service.
