India has been elected to chair the International Lead and Zinc Study Group. Shri C.D. Arha, Secretary, Department of Mines has been elected Chairman of the International Body on October 8, 2004 at its 49th Session at Vienna, Austria. Shri Arha will lead the group till the next session. Several leading members including Australia, China, USA, UK, Japan and France were interested to head the group.
The 28 Member Study Group was set up by the United Nations Organisation in 1959 to provide an international forum for co-operation in exchange of information in respect of Lead and Zinc. The Study Group facilitates transparency in markets for Lead and Zinc worldwide by providing a continuous flow of information on supply and demand through monthly publication of statistics and in-depth economic studies. This international body meets twice a year bringing together producing and consuming countries, Industry and Government representatives.
Other members of the Group include Algeria, Bulgaria, Belgium, European Union, Germany, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Republic of Korea, Norway, Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and Thailand.
