This years Sardar Patel Outstanding Institution Award has gone to Kerala Agricultural University, Trissur for designing its academic research programmes to address problems such as low productivity of crops and low returns and accelerated soil erosion. The Rs. 5 lakh award is given by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The award was presented by Union Minister of State for Agriculture Shri Kanti Lal Bhuria, here today.
ICAR awards are conferred for deserving institutions and individuals for furthering the advancement of agricultural research, extension and education.
Shri Sopan Kanchan from Maharashtra and Shri Deepak Roy of West Bengal have received Jagjivan Ram Kisan Puraskar for their innovative farming approaches and able leadership to the farming community. Shri Kanchan created a new awakening among farmers in the era of WTO and also provided the leadership to set up the national research center for grapes in Maharashtra. Shri Deepak Roy bagged the award for developing the technique of aquaculture for the conservation of specific endangered fish species.
The NG Ranga Farmer Award for diversified agriculture has gone to Shri Tukaram Borade of Maharashtra for diversification of existing cropping pattern. He advocated the cultivation of agro forestry crops such as eucalyptus, bamboo, teakwood and other seasonal crops along with wheat, onion and sugar cane, thereby improving farmers income and relieved them from debts and acute poverty.
Other awards were presented in the areas of research, education, agriculture, extension and agriculture journalism.
