Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Sh. Sunil Dutt today launched GANDHI GRAMODAYA SANKALP ABHIYAN FOR ALLROUND DEVELOPMENT OF VILLAGES. The year long programme to be under taken by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangthan under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will ensure development of 500 villages as model villages on the lines of Gandhi Gram Swaraj. Launching the programme with week-long ‘Atm Nirbhar Gram Vikas Saptaha’ (Self Reliant Village Development Week) celebrationsat Village Bhatti Mines, Mehrauli, New Delhi, Sh. Sunil Dutt said that allround development and self reliance of the villages was cherished dream of Mahatma Gandhi. India can not achieve prosperity in true sense until our villages are developed. He said that youth have to come forward to contribute in this gigantic task.

Speaking on the occassion, Sh. Oscar Fernandes, Minister for Statistics and Programme implementation said that the Government has initiated number of schemes for village development and a lot can be achieved through effective implementation of these schemes. Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangthan and other similar organisations working in the field can play important role in this direction, he added.

Apprising of the highlights of the programme Dr. Shakeel Ahmad, Vice Chairperson of NYKS said that the programme would not remain only on papers but would be achieved through a capaign mode within a year. Continuously monitoring of the programme at district level has been planned to ensure 100% implementation of the targets which include, full literacy, immunization of all children between the age group of 0-5 yrs, opening of village libraries and information centers with internet connection, vocational training centers for youth, training for modern agricultural practices, strengthening of Panchayati raj through information and public participation. Communal harmony programmes will also be the part of the development campaign.

500 villages are being adopted by Nehru Yuva Kendra in consultation with the District Administration, Mahila mandal and youth bodies. According to the criteria decided for selection, each village should have population not less than one thousand, village should have its own Gram Panchayat, most of the families should be below the poverty line and it should have mix religious groups and castes.
