The Union Cabinet which met on Wednesday gave its ex-post-facto approval for the signing of Additional Protocol to the SAARC Regional Convention on Suppression of Terrorism signed by the SAARC Foreign Ministers on January 6, 2004 during the twelfth SAARC Summit in Islamabad, and also gave its ex-post-facto approval for its ratification.
The purpose of this Additional Protocol is to strengthen the SAARC Regional Convention on Suppression of Terrorism, particularly by criminalizing the provision, collection or acquisition of funds for the purpose of committing terrorist acts and taking further measures to prevent and suppress financing of such acts. This will meet the obligations devolving on Member States in terms of UN Security Council Resolution.
